Historical & Numismatic Context

  • The Morton – Miller Signature Pair:

    • Azie Taylor Morton was the 36th Treasurer of the United States and remains the first and only African American woman to hold the post.

    • G. William Miller served a relatively short tenure as Treasury Secretary under President Jimmy Carter (August 1979 to January 1981), leaving the chairmanship of the Federal Reserve Board to step into the role.

  • The 1977A Transition: While Series 1977 carried the Morton–Blumenthal signatures, Series 1977A was designated specifically for the Morton–Miller combination. Standard print runs were produced in moderate volume, but high-grade survivors with original paper snap have become popular collectible type notes.

Technical & Visual Assessment

  • Estimated Grade: Choice Crisp Uncirculated (Ch CU 63 – Gem CU 65)

  • Surface & Paper Quality:

    • Displays strong, original paper body with clear embossing and deep, rich green ink contrast on both obverse and reverse.

    • Preserved inside a protective semi-rigid currency holder.

    • Crisp 90-degree corners with no rounding, fraying, or handling blunts.

    • Free of center folds, teller counting bends, wallet ripples, or pinholes.

  • Centering:

    • Obverse: Slightly favors the top border, with a slightly broader white margin along the lower edge, but fully within typical Uncirculated parameters.

    • Reverse: Nicely balanced side-to-side with solid vertical alignment.
