Historical Context

  • Known to collectors as the "Infalsificable" (Unforgeable) issue.

  • By late 1915, Mexico was choked with rampant counterfeits and competing regional scrip printed on cheap newsprint by various revolutionary factions. To end the monetary chaos, First Chief Venustiano Carranza contracted the high-security American Bank Note Company (ABNC) in New York to produce a sophisticated, anti-counterfeit paper currency backed by gold reserves.

  • Despite high hopes and superior engraving, the public had zero confidence in paper fiat by mid-1916. Merchants and workers refused to accept them, and within a few months the entire Infalsificable issue suffered catastrophic hyperinflation, forcing Carranza to abandon paper and declare that all commerce, taxes, and wages had to return to hard gold and silver coinage.

Technical & Visual Assessment

  • Technical Grade: Very Fine (VF 20 – VF 25)

  • Preservation Highlights:

    • Paper Body & Borders: High-grade ABNC security banknote paper. Borders and margins are intact on all four edges with no edge rips or splits cutting into the design.

    • Circulation & Folds: Light horizontal fold across the center medallion and minor vertical handling folds typical of quick mid-1916 commerce.

    • Surface Preservation: Shows natural, even environmental age-toning and light handling patina across the white margins.

    • Print Definition: Deep, sharp ABNC intaglio engraving on the eagle and Olmec head, bold red typography on serial numbers № 4466827, and clear reverse geometry with its original period ink handstamp.
