Historical & Numismatic Context
-
The Final Small-Size Silver Certificates: Series 1957 (including 1957, 1957A, and 1957B) represents the very last standard-issue $1 Silver Certificate series produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing before the U.S. transitioned fully to Federal Reserve Notes in Series 1963.
-
The 1957B Sub-Series: Series 1957B notes carry the signature combination of Treasurer Kathryn O'Hay Granahan and Treasury Secretary C. Douglas Dillon, printed between 1963 and 1965.
-
The "Star" Replacement Mechanism: The star (
*) indicates a replacement note. During inspection at the BEP, if a sheet of 32 notes had an error, misprint, or ink smear, federal law prohibited reprinting the duplicate serial number. Instead, the defective sheet was destroyed and substituted with a pre-numbered "Star" sheet to maintain accurate batch accounting. -
Motto Addition: Authorized by Congress in 1955 and signed into law by President Eisenhower, the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" first appeared on paper currency on Series 1957 $1 Silver Certificates (above the large reverse word "ONE").
