Historical Context
-
Prepared secretly by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing in 1944 in anticipation of the Allied invasion to retake the Philippine archipelago from Imperial Japanese forces.
-
Carried ashore in large crates by General Douglas MacArthur’s liberation forces during the Leyte landing in October 1944.
-
Issued to restore economic stability and re-establish a trusted, U.S.-backed monetary system, immediately rendering the hyperinflated Japanese Military Occupation ("Mickey Mouse") currency worthless.
-
Remained in active post-war circulation across the Philippines until the formation of the Central Bank of the Philippines in 1949.
