Historical Context

  • The "Original" That Spawned the 20,000 Bolívares: When the 2008 Bolívar Fuerte family was unveiled, this 100 Bolívares note was the highest denomination in the entire country. Two years after this 2015 printing, when hyperinflation made 100 Bolívares worthless, the Central Bank took this exact engraving of Bolívar and the Red Siskins to create the 20,000 Bolívares note you reviewed earlier.

  • The Infamous 72-Hour Demonetization Attempt: In December 2016, the Venezuelan government abruptly announced that all 100 Bolívares notes would be demonetized in 72 hours to combat currency smuggling, triggering widespread public chaos and panic banking runs before the order was repeatedly delayed until the August 2018 monetary reset.
