Historical Context

  • Design Recycled from the 20 Bolívares Note: Notice the direct continuation of the pattern seen with the 10,000 and 20,000 Bolívares notes. The Central Bank reused the exact plate portrait of Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi and the Hawksbill turtles from the 20 Bolívares note, recasting them in a rich green color scheme with "5000" replacing the previous denomination.

  • The 2016–2017 Inflation Spiral: First authorized in late 2016 to catch up with rampant inflation, these notes circulated for less than two years before being wiped out and fully demonetized by the August 20, 2018 currency reform that launched the Bolívar Soberano.
